Intrepid

Intrepid
"Intrepid", was the success defender of the America's Cup in both 1967 and 1970.

The painting depicts the champion 12 metre Intrepid slogging to windward in a smokey southwesterly wind during the America's Cup, off Newport, Rhode Island. She has just rounded the leeward mark, which can be seen in the left hand background. The Australian challenger is lowering her spinnaker in preparation to rounding the mark.

The unsuccessful Australian challengers for the America's Cup were "Dame Pattie" in 1967 and "Gretel II" in 1970.
