"Bandit leading the fleet to Channel Island, 1967"

The painting depicts the “Bandit” surfing down a wave on her way to rounding Channel Island ( in the background) at the head of the fleet of junior offshore group racers in the 1967/68 season. My brother, Sir Peter Blake is on the helm, I am tailing the spinnaker sheet next to him and Crawford Duncan is about to winch in the spinnaker sheet slightly. We won the Junior Offshore Group Championship for the 1967/68 season.

“Bandit” was designed by Van de Stadt and built by Peter( the first boat he built) in our parents backyard, with some help by myself and friends of Peter. She was 23ft 4” LOA with 7ft 6” beam and displaced approximately 1.25 tons.
She was launched at Devonport, Auckland in 1967.
