"Gloriana" leads the fleet from the start at Brenton Reef lightship, August 1891. | During the 1891 summer at Newport, all eyes were on the new 46 ft. class( waterline length).
"Gloriana", the new revolutionary design by Nathaniel Herreshoff, is shown leading the fleet at the start - a position she did not relinquish for the rest of that race. Close astern of "Gloriana" and having a tussle for space, are the white hulled "Sayonara" and the black hulled "Oweene". Hidden behind the lightship is the "Harpoon" followed by the black hulled "Barbara".
"Gloriana" was undefeated in the eight races she took part in, thus establishing Nat. Herreshoff as the top yacht designer of the time. She was 71 ft. length on the deck, 46 ft. LWL., 13 ft. beam and 10 ft. 6ins. draft. | Dimensions | 16" x 26" | Media | Oil on canvas |
