Early morning Venice, mid 1700’s. The entrance to The Grand Canal.
It is early morning off the entrance to The Grand Canal with the sun lighting up the two anchored ships, drying their sails in the calm conditions.

A large felucca can be seen anchored, on the left hand side of the painting, between the two ships. A ‘catspaw’ of wind has just filled the sails of a small lateen rigged cargo vessel, on the right hand side. Another small square rigged vessel, on the left hand side, is being rowed towards the entrance of The Grand Canal. Gondolas criss-cross the waterways.

In the background, on the right hand side, is the Custom House building and the large dome of The Church of Santa Maria della Salute, at the entrance to The Grand Canal.
