"Commercial Wharf, Nantucket, looking over towards Shimmo. Circa 1896" | A beautiful calm evening on Nantucket Harbor as a schooner sets sail. A cloud casts a shadow over a schooner at anchor but the late evening sun illuminates the two sailing catboats and a large sloop at anchor. 'Catspaws' of wind make interesting patterns on the water. Two children play on a catboat, aground in the right hand foreground.
Alongside Commercial Wharf is another schooner and a catboat, with mainsail hoisted to dry. Men gather next to the wharf shed to talk after the days work is done.
In the background is Shimmo, with sun reflecting off the cliffs. Back in the 1890's there were very few houses out on Shimmo- three can be seen in the painting. | Dimensions | 24" x 36" | Media | oil on canvas |
