"Thelma" leads "Ariki" and "Rainbow". 1907 Auckland Anniversary Regatta." | Under fine skies and a fresh North Easterley breeze, "Thelma" led for the whole of the 1907 Auckland Anniversary Regatta First Division Race, narrowly beating "Ariki" over the line. They were closely followed by "Rainbow" in third place.
In the painting "Thelma" can be seen surfing under spinnaker past Torpedo Wharf, Devonport, with North Head and Rangitoto in the background. Just astern of "Thelma" is the paddlewheel ferry "Victoria", with a full complement of sightseers watching the race. "Ariki" is just to windward of the "Victoria" and "Rainbow" can be seen further astern.
A cloud casts a shadow on the water in the right hand foreground and across the Devonport foreshore. Sunlight reflects of the waves in the fresh breeze.
It is amazing to think that we will be able to recreate this scene, 100 years later, with the relaunching of "Thelma" and "Rainbow" this year, 2007, under their original hull and rig confirgurations. Once again they will be able to race against "Ariki". | Dimensions | 15" x 20" | Media | Oil on canvas |
