"Venice, circa 1900. Looking across the Grand Canal to the Santa Maria Della Salute."
This evening view of Venice is from the Piazza San Marco, looking across the entrance to the Grand Canal towards the Santa Maria Della Salute. The evening sun is reflecting off the water on the right hand side. Buildings overlooking the Piazza San Marco have cast their shadows over the water in the foreground. The foreground cobblestones, still wet after rain, reflect the evening light. A man aboard the small cutter, tied to the steps, is lowering the mainsail, after attempting to dry it after the rain. A gondola approaches the steps with a couple of passengers. A lagoon fishing boat, called a bragozzo, sails past in the light breeze blowing across the Grand Canal. Its sails catch the last of the sun. At the entrance to the Grand Canal a schooner is lowering its sails before being towed to its berth, directly astern at the Punta Delle Salute.
